Description
Valerian is a herbaceous and flowering plant found in Europe and Asia but is now cultivated in many parts of the world. The part of Valerian that is used is its roots, which have beneficial properties for the human body.
Properties:
- Suppresses stomach aches and pains related to menstruation, muscles and joints.
- It has antiviral and relaxing properties thus relieving symptoms such as headache and fever.
- Used against anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep disorders, irritability, nervous asthma, induces sleep.
- Fights worms that parasitize the digestive system.
- It is used to minimize brain swelling in patients with developing Alzheimer's.
How to use: Put 1 teaspoon in a cup of water and simmer for 10-12 minutes. Strain and add if you wish sugar, honey or any sweetener of your choice.
Caution!
- It should not be used by people taking antidepressants, antiepileptics, antihistamines, antifungals and cholesterol-lowering drugs without the advice of their doctor.
- Consumption of valerian can cause increased heart rate or upset stomach.
- Its use should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation, as well as by children.
- Prolonged use can worsen the symptoms, which with prudent use reduces.
