Description
Elder is a small native deciduous shrub that has been used since antiquity for its healing properties. It grows in abundance both in Greece and in the rest of Europe, the flowers of the plant are very fragrant and have a white-pale yellow color.
It is rich in: vitamins A, B, C, flavonoids, carotenoids, tannins. Calcium, potassium, phosphorus and amino acids.
Properties:
- It has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antimicrobial properties, which makes it ideal for strengthening the immune system but also for treating colds and viruses. Fights coughs, colds, flu and sinusitis.
- It has a strong antioxidant effect, neutralizes the free radicals of the body and inhibits the oxidation of other antioxidant molecules.
- It has diuretic and hepatic properties and therefore reduces swelling and congestion while helping to treat constipation and fluid retention.
- Externally it is especially beneficial in cases of skin dryness and sunburn. One of the uses of elder flowers was as a bleach to reduce freckles on the skin.
How to use: Put 1 teaspoon in a cup of hot water for 6-8 minutes. Strain and add if you wish sugar, honey or any sweetener of your choice.
Caution! Do not consume during pregnancy or lactation, people with diabetes, autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus) or people taking diuretics and laxatives.
